Pattong Brooch
Pattong Brooch
The Bontoc war dance, Pattong, was performed as part of headhunting expeditions and war ceremonials to incite courage and strength among warriors as they prepared to venture into danger.
The Bontoc people hail from the central and eastern portions of the Mountain Provence of the island of Luzon. Overlapping geographically with other tribes of the Cordillera region, the five pointed shield used by other groups such as the Ifugao and the Kalinga are present within Bontoc culture. The fracturing and re soldering of this bronze shield represents resilience through times of trial and suffering; repairing oneself to fight another day.
