Kabunian Earrings

$475.00

The Ifugao people hail from the mountainous northern province of the same name to the island of Luzon. Closely tied to the mountains, the earth, and the rice terraces of the region, the name Ifugao is derived from “ipugo” meaning “earth people/mortals” as to distinguish them from deities, as well as the word “pugo” which means “hill.” Ifugao is an umbrella term referring to a family of ethnic groups from this geographic region that share many similar qualities whilst maintaining distinct and rich individual traditions. Despite their varying traditions and customs, the highest ranking deity for the Ifugao was Kabunian, who served as a protector of communities and brought agricultural prosperity to the region. He is also seen as the benevolent and all powerful creator of humans.

This pair of statement earrings are crafted from two bronze Ifugao battle shields. These shield have been repeatedly fragmented and re soldered to emulate the restoration of a memory that cant be retrieved entirely. This pair of earrings fit together with one another like a puzzle along their lines of fragmentation. Due to their robust construction, omega clips are concealed to secure the earring posts firmly to the ear.
