Bulul Ring

$360.00

Bulul are carved wooden statues that the Ifugao people of Northern Luzon used to guard their rice crops and bring forth a prosperous harvest. These totems were representative of Ifugao ancestors and were believed to contain their essence. By placing these statues around the house, families called upon their ancestors to protect their crops, and therefore their food security.

The Ifugao are known for their rich history of rice agriculture and for their method of terracing entire mountain ranges to create stepped rice fields; the most famous of these being the Banaue Rice Terraces. The 2,000 year old network of Ifugao rice terraces covers an astonishing 4,000 square miles, with the lengths of the terrace steps (if lined up end to end) spanning half the circumference of the Earth. This ring depicts the terraced mountaintops of the Ifugao region, resting on a twisting band of rice stalks and grain.
