Axehead Earring (single)

$150.00

This pair of earrings are modeled after the headhunting axes of tribes on the island of Luzon. These ceremonial weapons were were used in the practice of headhunting; a now outlawed and obsolete practice since the early 20th century. While many motivations existed for headhunting, the majority of headhunting raids were performed as a method of community retribution on behalf of the families of victims of heinous crimes. These expeditions sought to eliminate the perpetrator and retrieve their head as a way to restore balance: to compensate for the loss of a good spirit by eliminating a bad one. Despite the fact that Spanish colonization lasted from 1565 to 1898, many small villages in the mountainous rainforests of Luzon remained relatively untouched due to overwhelming fear of hunting tribes.
